Gaines R. Johnson was born in 1950. In the 1960s through 1980, Gaines was a commercial radio and television announcer and engineer in cities across Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia. He studied Geology at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia from 1981 through 1985 before joining the engineering branch of the U.S. Government's Voice of America radio service in 1986. He was a member of the U.S. Foreign Service and has served overseas in Central America, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. In 2005 he was appointed as a member of the U.S. Senior Foreign Service Diplomatic Corps and retired from U.S. Government service in May 2016. Since 1997, Gaines Johnson has also maintained a Bible teaching website on the Internet - "The Bible, Genesis & Geology" at He is a proponent of the Ruin-Reconstruction (Gap Theory) interpretation of Genesis. He received the degree of Doctor of Theology in December 2018 from College of The Open Bible at Greenville, South Carolina. Gaines is also a semi-professional film and VFX editor.
