Tartaric acid or dicarboxylic acid is a white crystalline acid. It was discovered hundreds of years ago, and introduced to many people back then as ingredients for their foods. It's found in many of the fruits that we eat. Bananas, grapes, apples, avocados and more. Tartaric acid is still used as an ingredient for many foods. Some cultural foods include a lot of tartaric acids, while others are not as much. Tartaric acid also found in many drinks. Tartaric acids also has some uses. It is found in lotion, because tartaric acids are good for the skin. It is also good for pimples and acne. Tartaric acids also have side effects, Tartaric acid is an interesting topic to research about.



Tartaric acid has three different stereoisomeric forms: dextrorotatory, levorotatory and racemic. Dextrorotatory and Levorotatory molecules have different structures that cause them to rotate the plane of polarized light. Dextrorotatory rotates light clockwise, which Levorotatory rotates light counterclockwise. Racemic mixtures have equal proportion of the two structures. Tartaric acid are soluble in water forming salt and Rochelle salt.


Tartaric acid is a white crystalline a organic compound, and an acid. It is found a lot of fruits like grapes, apricots, apples and even bananas. It was originally found to be beneficial for the health. Although to much of it can be very dangerous, and can lead to death. Tartaric acid has a melting point of 206 degrees Celsius and a density of 1.79.[1]

Tartaric acid is known to be found in plants for hundreds of years. It was known as tartar to many Greeks and Romans. Tartaric Acid was first identified in 1769 by Swedish chemist Carl Wilhelm Scheele. He is the one shown on the image. Carl had a huge contribution to mineral acids and organic acid. He used a complex system to discover tartaric acid. He first boiled tartar (form of tartaric acid) with chalk and decomposed it with sulfuric acid. He then added Argol with dilute hydrochloric acid, which caused dextrotartaric acid to be liberated. [2]


Tartaric acid can be useful in many ways. One of the most common ways it is used is in foods. The acid is commonly mixed with backing soda, which results in more dough. This stragedy of mixing the two together is one of the reason it is used in a lot of foods. Tartaric acid is used in cake, cookies, candies and even drinks like carbonated drinks, fruit juices, and wine. Tartaric acid has a sour taste to it, which is why it is popular for wine. The amount of acidity in the Tartaric Acid affects the taste and the look in the wine. Mexican cuisine also use Tartaric acid in their foods. The acid was first introduced to them in the 16th century, and has been a popular recipe for them since. [3]

Tartaric acid also has uses besides food. It is used in the preparation of cement. It slows the cement from setting. Tartaric acid also is included in products like lotion and body creams. Tartaric acid also has some health benefits, and also harmful side effects. [4]

If you eat foods that contain tartaric acid such as fruits, it will help you in the future. Tartaric acid also is beneficial to glucose intolerance. It helps reduce fat, wrinkles and even tight faces. It is beneficial to the skin, which is why tartaric acid is contained in some lotion. It is also helps get ride of acne and pimples. Tartaric acids has a lot of great benefits.

Tartaric acids also has some side effects. There are not as much side effects as benefits, but it is important to know how it can affect you in a negative way. A large consumption in tartaric acid causes digestive issues. It is noted that problems such as nausea, infections and pain occur. Also overeating could be a side effect of having to much Tartaric acid. In order to avoid all these problems, eat a normal size portion of tartaric acid.
