Bangui definition

Under the Bangui definition of AIDS, also known as the "1985 World Health Organization AIDS surveillance case definition," developed in 1985 by the CDC and WHO in Bangui, Central African Republic. AIDS is diagnosed in Africa with a score of 12 or higher, based on a type of number system with various criteria in order for a diagnosis to be achieved.

Characteristics

Important signs

  1. Weight loss exceeding 10% of body weight: 4;
  2. Protracted asthenia: 4;

Very frequent signs

  1. Continuous or repeated attacks of fever for more than a month: 3;
  2. Diarrhoea lasting for more than a month: 3

Other signs:

  1. Cough: 2;
  2. Pneumopathy: 2;
  3. Oropharyngeal candidiasis: 4;
  4. Chronic or relapsing cutaneous herpes: 4;
  5. Generalized pruritic dermatosis: 4;
  6. Herpes zoster (relapsing): 4;
  7. Generalized adenopathy: 2;
  8. Neurological signs: 2;
  9. Generalized Kaposi's sarcoma: 12;

Exclusion criteria

  1. Pronounced malnutrition;
  2. Cancer;
  3. Immunosuppressive treatment;


Revision

In 1994, the WHO introduced a new definition incorporating the statement that HIV testing should be performed. However, it is still not required for an AIDS diagnosis.
