Anxiety is a feeling of uneasiness and worry, usually generalized and unfocused as an overreaction to a situation that is only subjectively seen as a nightmare. Anxiety is normal everyone experiences anxiety at times. It is also a system in our body that helps us to deal with real danger or to be able to perform at our best. Anxiety does not last forever it is only temporary and will eventually go away. If someone has anxiety that doesn't go away then they most likely have an anxiety disorder. Anxiety is not dangerous all the sensations someone might feel when they are anxious are there to help protect us from danger.[1]

Characteristics and Symptoms

Anxiety is a mental illness that everyone experiences at some points in their lives. Anxiety tends to start affecting people from ages 6-13. However mainly effects people from 14-60+. If they experience anxiety it is usually only temporary. It could last a couple of days or hours. But if someone is experiencing constant anxiety for a month that person may have an anxiety disorder which will never go away unless they try to deal with it. Anxiety will occur at points when your overwhelmed. There are several anxiety disorders that all can be treated through therapy or medication. It is best to deal with an anxiety disorder as soon as possible or it will have a negative impact on a persons life. Anxiety can only have a negative impact on someone’s life if they let it. It also helps us learn from mistakes and protects us from dangerous situations.

Anxiety has many symptoms the most common symptoms are coughing, fear, headaches, difficulty with speaking, shaking, trouble concentrating, blushing, trouble breathing, sweating, yawning, and trouble sleeping. It can even affect your mood such as loneliness, anger, agitation, annoyance, aggression, and violence. Anxiety can even affect the muscles such as muscle pains and cramps. Anxiety can also have an effect on a person’s life if they don't try to deal with it. Symptoms that affect the whole body can be related to muscles, temperature, blood, and their circulatory system. The way anxiety affects the muscles are muscle pain, cramps, aches, and twitching. The effects that anxiety has over blood and the circulatory system are blood pressure, circulation problems, hypertension, and low blood pressure. The effects that anxiety can affect body temperature are fevers,cold sweat, temperature changes, and feeling cold.[2]

Anxiety Disorders

If someone’’s feeling ok of anxiety are extreme,and last longer than six months, and are interfering with their life, they may have an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are one of the most common mental health problems. Anxiety disorders are mental illnesses which cause distress keeping a person from moving on in life. There are several anxiety disorders they are Panic disorder, Social anxiety disorder, Generalized anxiety disorder, Specific Phobias, and Agoraphobia. Panic disorder is when people can have panic attacks at random moments. Social anxiety disorder is when a person feels overwhelming worry and self-consciousness about things that occur in everyday situations. Generalized anxiety disorder is excessively worrying about anything and everything, including worrying about worrying. Specific Phobias can cause people to also fixate about others judging them, being embarrassed, or ridiculed. Anxiety disorders increase a persons chances from suffering from another medical illness, such as cardiovascular disorders, including obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Specifically it affects increased body weight and abdominal fat, high blood pressure, and greater levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, and glucose have all been linked to anxiety.[3]

Anxiety can be treated through medication, psychotherapy, and counseling. The types of medical treatments for anxiety are antidepressants, anti-anxiety drugs, and beta blockers. There are at least 71 different types of anti-anxiety drugs, examples of these drugs include Xanax, Ativan, Lexapro, Valium, and Clonazepam. Most of the drugs used to treat anxiety have to be prescribed.[4] Counseling is a form of talk therapy in which a mental healthcare provider helps patients develop strategies and coping skills to address specific issues like stress management or interpersonal problems. Counseling is generally designed to be a short-term therapy. Psychotherapy is more long-term and aims at a broader range of issues such as patterns of behavior. The patient's particular anxiety diagnosis and personal preference guides what therapies would be best suited to treat them. The one goal with any type of psychotherapy is to help the patients regulate their emotions, learn how to their manage stress, and how to understand patterns in their behavior that affect their interpersonal relationships. Ways of preventing anxiety disorders is by learning relaxation strategies.[5]
